Save The Children
Problem: The Addis Ababa offices of Save the Children are full of passionate, knowledgeable and highly skilled charity professionals. Yet, their written work, including the stories they wrote for the charity’s newsletters and magazines wasn’t having the impact it should.
Solution: I created and delivered a series of two-day training courses in writing stories in the form of magazine articles. This included a day ‘in the field’ visiting Beza Lehiwot, a project that helps women and children with HIV / AIDS. The participants learned ‘on the job’ journalism skills such as finding stories, interviewing people and getting the quotes that matter.
Results: The participants learned how to pull together their skills, and were able to write compelling articles, the kind that can touch people’s hearts and minds. At the end of the course, they shared their articles with each other, and were inspired to continue communicating in this new style.
